Kim Kardashian recently showcased a remarkable piece of Princess Diana’s jewelry, pairing the late royal's iconic amethyst cross pendant with a daring white gown.
This stunning appearance took place at the LACMA Art+Film Gala in Los Angeles on November 2, where Kim gave a modern twist to the beloved heirloom.
Originally, Princess Diana wore the vintage Garrard pendant, which features square-cut amethysts surrounded by circular-cut diamonds totaling 5.25 carats, during a charity event in 1987. She styled it with a velvet Victorian-inspired dress designed by Catherine Walker. In contrast, Kim chose to pair the striking pendant with a plunging white Gucci dress, adding a unique, bold touch. She also shortened the pendant’s chain so it rested directly on her chest and accessorized with a layered pearl choker and a few shorter diamond necklaces.
In 2023, Kim acquired the pendant from Sotheby’s for $197,453, a price that more than doubled the piece’s pre-auction estimate. According to Kristian Spofforth, head of jewelry at Sotheby’s London, this pendant’s bold design, vibrant color, and statement-making quality made it an exceptional acquisition, particularly in the hands of another world-famous figure.
Princess Diana’s fondness for Garrard’s creations is well-known; the royal jeweler also crafted her iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which now belongs to the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton. When Prince William proposed in 2010, he used Diana’s ring, which Kate has left unaltered, as it matched her ring size perfectly. “It is very special,” Kate shared, noting her deep appreciation for the honor of wearing such a significant piece.
